The Samem Diary, January 19, 1803, states:
"he has been here for some time, working at gun-smithing with his Uncle Christoph Vogler."

On July 15, 1806 the Collegium at Salem ruled that "Br. John Vogler may be allowed to make silver ware and repair clocks in addition to his regular handicraft."

In 1807 John visited Pennsylvania to observe local gunmaking, and upon this return continued working in the gunsmith shop at the Single Brethren's, where he is found February 22, 1809.
